Champa Ram beats the odds to get into IIT, turns dream into reality

Champa Ram, an alumnus from Satya Bharti School, Jatibhandu, Jodhpur secured admission to IIT Madras – Civil Engineering department recently. He hails from a remote village in Rajasthan where education was given neither the attention nor the importance it deserves until Bharti Foundation opened a Satya Bharti School in his village. There are 183 schools under Bharti Foundation’s Satya Bharti School Program as of September 2020 in six states of India.

Champa’s story of determination is inspiring, as well as heartening. His father who was a marginal farmer expired in the year 2017. His mother and eldest brother Bhagwan Ram took the responsibility and toiled for hours to earn for the family of six.

Joining school abetted Champa forget the miseries back at home momentarily. He worked hard every day to move one step closer to his ambition of becoming an engineer. During his preparations for the IIT-JEE exams, he lost his ailing mother. Despite the adversities, Champa Ram scored AIR 11,036 and Category rank 2180. He is excited to start online classes from 23rd November 2020, with a basic smartphone his brother gifted him.

When asked how he feels about this achievement, Champa said, “I have come this far because of my teachers at Satya Bharti School who helped me dream big. An interaction with Sir Rakesh Bharti Mittal added new zeal to my ambition of becoming an engineer one day. Above all, my family supported me through and through. I am indebted to everyone.”

Champa’s dedicated efforts show that every child has the potential to excel, and access to quality education, proper guidance and encouragement play a crucial role in helping overcome challenges and turning dreams into reality.

Congratulating Champa Ram, Mamta Saikia, CEO, Bharti Foundation, said, “We are working to improve the accessibility and quality of education across rural India. At Bharti Foundation, we believe children are capable of excelling. Access to quality education, guidance along with holistic development play a vital role in their progress. These also help them overcome challenges and transform them into good human beings and role models for society “.

“We are extremely proud of Champa Ram for getting one step closer to his dream of becoming an engineer. This is a testimony of underprivileged young people of our country realizing their potential”.
