We congratulate Simranjeet Kaur on being conferred with bronze medal in the ‘Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards 2019’. (An annual nationwide search to identify and recognize school students who have made a positive difference in their communities through volunteer community service). She won this accolade for her campaign on ‘menstruation education’, which she undertook in her school and community, to unshackle the chains of myths and beliefs.
Women in her village were mired in archaic beliefs regarding menstruation. They used to believe that during this periods, girls cannot step out of homes, enter the kitchen, or even take a bath. They used unhygienic sanitary pads made from old rags for their daughters, instead of the more hygienic sanitary pads. Simranjeet decided to work on these belief systems and bring about a change. Through this campaign, she educated girls and spread awareness about the use and availability of sanitary material as well as importance of balanced diet.
An alumni of Satya Bharti School (Khanpur village, Ludhiana), Simranjeet Kaur wants to become an IPS officer and serve the nation. We are so proud of her, and wish her all the best for her future. (In pic: Simranjeet with her parents)
